Garvin Nicholas

Garvin Nicholas was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 2001 by the Inner Temple and admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago in June 2002.

Garvin has been awarded an LLM (Commendation) in Maritime Law from City University of London and holds a Bachelor of Laws (Upper Second Class) from the Oxford Brookes University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Legal Studies from the Inns of Court School of Law.

An attorney for the last fifteen (15) years, he has successfully balanced his contribution to public service with his legal practice.

Garvin is a former Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago and a former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ambassador to Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. He was voted the 2013 Diplomat of the Year from the Americas by his peers in London.

As High Commissioner, Garvin was a member of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Foundation. He served on a number of committees and sub-committees including being chairman of the Grants Committee of the Commonwealth Foundation, member of the Commonwealth Education Trust, member of the Commonwealth Advisory Panel for the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, chairman of the Sub-Committee of the CARICOM High Commissioners for Trade and Development, and member of the Sub-Committee to rationalize the Strategic Plan of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Garvin is also a Past President of the Rotary Club of POS West and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Garvin’s goal is to build a practice of excellence in the fields of International Trade, Marine Insurance, Shipping and Maritime Law. He is well connected with legal practitioners throughout the Commonwealth especially in the UK and CARICOM territories which allows for the cross-fertilization of ideas and practical assistance in a shrinking global environment.

Garvin has also practiced in the fields of Administrative, Commercial, Conveyancing, Criminal and Family Law.
